Book Transcription for Disabled Students Training Course

Who is the course for?

It is for anyone who needs or has an interest in creating or converting books and other learning resources into alternative formats for learners with "Print Disabilities".

As part of our Books For All Partnership Project we are offering 10 free places on this course.

Course Presenters

Paul Nisbet and Dr. Stuart Aitken are based in CALL Scotland at the University of Edinburgh. CALL Scotland is the Scottish national centre working in the field of ICT for learners with special educational needs. Paul and Stuart have been working with accessible formats for many years and have developed and delivered a wide range of courses for hundreds of teachers in Scotland, on using and making materials. They work directly with pupils and schools; are the authors of the 2007 Books for All Report; led the development and introduction of SQA digital exam papers; are responsible for licensing Heather, the free high quality Scottish computer voice, for Scottish schools and WordTalk, the free text reader for Microsoft Word; and initiated the Books for All Scotland Database, which is a database of materials in accessible formats.

What will I learn?

The course will cover material preparation to PDF and MS Word for blind, partially-sighted and disabled students with emphasis on hands-on experience.

How long is the course and what dates are available?

The course will be delivered over a two days period and is currently being held on 21st and 22nd July for the first course and 28th and 29th July 2011 for the second course.

Where is the course being held?

The venue is our training centre at 383, Battle Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN37 7BE.

Who is eligible to apply?

This offer is open to all teachers and teaching assistants producing educational material for print-disabled people in education in England.

What does the course cost?

Nothing. The course is free. However you will need to secure over night accommodation if you are not commuting for the two day course.
